What is e-filing of Income-tax Returns? E-filing refers to the electronic mode of filing of Income-tax returns. This is a paperless easy transmission of data online into the Server of the Income-tax Department. Such returns filed electronically is called as 'e-returns'.
Can all assessees file their income tax returns online? Except for persons listed below, all others can e-file their income tax returns online: - Charitable/Religious Institutions claiming exemption under section 11 or 12 Scientific Research claiming exemption under section 10(21) News Agency Trade or Professional Associations Trust/Society for promotion of Khadi/Village Industries Any Hospital or Educational or Charitable or Religious Institutions claiming exemption under section 10(23C) Political Party Trade Union/Associations Any University or College or Other Institution engaged in Scientific Research and referred to in Section 35(1)(ii) or Section 35(1)(iii).
Is it mandatory for all the assessees to e-file returns online? Online filing of Income-tax Returns is Mandatory only for Companies and Firms (which are required to get their books of accounts audited).
Is e-return to be signed? If so, how is the e-return signed? The e-return is to be signed by the same persons, who are required to sign the paper return. There are two options available to sign the e-return. Option 1 is Digital Signature In case you use digital signature to sign your e-return, then there is no need to file any paper document. Option 2 is 'One Page Acknowledgment Return' ITR-V Incase the return is not digitally signed, on successful uploading of e-Return, the ITR-V Form would be generated which needs to be printed by the tax payers. A duly verified ITR-V form should be submitted with the local Income Tax Office withing 15 days of filing electronically. This completes the online filing process. No other document is required to be submitted.
How is e-return prepared & filed? Step 1: Create a User Id & Password for you with the Income-tax Department at http://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.jsp. Preferably use your PAN as your User ID. Step 2: Download the appropriate return form applicable to you. To know about the return form applicable to you click here. E-forms are available here. Step 3: Fill up the downloaded income tax return form. Verify it using the tools available therein and Create XML file. Step 4: Login to the Income-tax Department Site by using your User-id & Password. Step 5: Upload the XML file generated into the webpage. Step 6: If you have digital signature Add the digital signature and submit the e-return. Print the acknowledgement and keep it for your records. If you do not have digital signature Submit the XML file alone and print the ITR-V acknowledgement. Verify & Manually Sign the ITR-V form. Submit ITR-V to the local Income Tax Office within 15 days from the date of e-filing.
How do I get a confirmation that e-return has been filed successfully? After the e-return file has been uploaded successfully onto the Income tax Department server, a receipt is displayed with an acknowledgment number. The acknowledgment number is confirmation of the successful submission of your e-returns.
What to do if I get an error message at the time of submission? It could happen due to incorrect data or non-filling of mandatory fields. Rectify the errors until there are no further error messages. Do not use any Special Characters such as -, _, &, !, ^, <, >, #, ~, %, or * while doing data entry since it may cause an error while generating XML file
Can I file my revised returns by e-filing?. Yes. Revised returns have to filed in the same way as original returns. The Acknowledgement number of the Original return can be entered. Go to Top
